Years 4, 5, 6 - what does that look like



Years 4, 5, and 6 continue and extend the progression of learning to develop successful learners, confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens.

As a provider of distance education, BrisbaneSDE engages children through a combination of online scheduled lessons, delivered by their class teacher as well as offline lessons working with their Home Tutor.

What will your school day look like?

Teachers work an 8.30 – 2.30 school day and students are expected to attend scheduled online lessons with their teachers during this time.  A student timetable will be provided by class teachers detailing scheduled lessons along with suggestions on the structure of your day to ensure your student completes required tasks.  A Work Rate Calendar with greater day to day detail will also be provided which itemises tasks and work to be completed on a daily basis. 
 
Following are some examples of what a school day (morning, middle and afternoon session) can look like in Year 4, 5 and 6:
 
Prior to the first session: Prepare for the school day. This includes checking daily notices, announcements on Blackboard and emails, organising materials for the day, complete pre lesson tasks, practise spelling and reading.
 
Morning session: English and/or Literacy is usually the focus for this time of the day. Online sessions will include a mix of subject English, reading and literacy lessons. When students are not online during this time they are expected to be completing set tasks as described in the Work Rate Calendar.
 
Middle session: The focus of this session is usually Maths lessons. When students are not online during this time they will have work to continue. 
 
Afternoon session: The focus of this session is usually completing Science, HPE, The Arts, Technologies or HaSS subjects (Geography, History, Civics and Citizenship, Business and Economics). These subjects are often delivered in weekly online sessions with the rest of the lessons being completed offline by the student with the support of the Home Tutor.  Some of these subjects are presented as eTeach self-paced learning modules.

Throughout the year there are opportunities for students to engage in face to face interactions with their teachers and peers, these can include Enrichment Days, excursions, whole school Athletics Carnival, whole school swimming carnival and swim schools. 

In Year 5 and 6, there is a requirement that all state school students study a language other than English (LOTE).  Students will be expected to attend one scheduled online lesson per week.  Currently the languages offered to year 5 and 6 students are:​

  • German
  • Japanese

Technical Requirements 

To successfully engage at BrisbaneSDE there are some minimum technology requirements for accessing our online learning environment.

  • ​Computer – each student needs a computer to access lessons, as all students are expected to attend online scheduled lessons.  Please note, if you have more than one student enrolled at BrisbaneSDE (primary and secondary) they will need individual access to a computer as their scheduled lessons may be on at the same time. Please note that due to the nature of our lesson delivery being visual and interactive, a larger screen is preferable. A laptop or a desktop computer are both acceptable. As a recommendation, a minimum 17 inch monitor would be ideal. If students are working on a laptop, a wireless mouse is recommended as opposed to the touchpad.

  • Headset – high quality, wireless headset with a microphone.  
  • Web cam

Work Rate Calendars (WRC)

Each year level has a WRC covering a 5 week period.  This will detail daily lessons that will be taught both online with the class teacher and offline by Home Tutors.  It also includes Return of Work that is due to class teachers on a weekly basis.  
The WRC also details pre lesson activities for students to complete at home prior to the scheduled lesson.  These activities could include watching a short video, reading a text or completing a task. 
The WRC is a frequently used document. It is suggested that it is printed and placed in your student’s work space for easy reference.   The WRC can be accessed via the Blackboard Course.

Blackboard

At BrisbaneSDE we use Blackboard Collaborate as a virtual classroom.  It is here you will find announcements/notices from teachers, access links to your scheduled online lessons, class timetables, Work Rate Calendars and Unit Sequence Plans.  
This is also the access point for the digital dropbox where return of work is uploaded for your student’s teacher to review.  
Under learning area specific tabs you will find units of work and curriculum resources (digital learning objects, lesson specific videos and discussion boards) that students will need.  These may be used to consolidate students’ understanding of lesson concepts.    

Enrichment Days

Once a term, students are invited to attend an Enrichment Day at BrisbaneSDE. These days will involve the students spending time with their class teachers and year level peers.  A variety of learning experiences are planned by the class teachers in line with the current unit’s curriculum focus.  These experiences can include guest speakers and hands on activities.  With the distance mode of teaching in mind, there may be opportunities for students who are unable to attend BrisbaneSDE on Enrichment Days, to login to an online session and participate. Other class activities, excursions and incursions, may be organised by a year level to enrich unit work.
