Geographic isolation/distance​

This category applies where the student is unable to attend a local school due to the home location being in a remote area within the meaning of Education (General Provisions) Act 2006.

A student is deemed to be living in a remote area:


(a)
Where the student's principal place of residence

​is at least 16km from the nearest applicable school; and
​is at least 4.5km from a school transport service approved by the chief executive (transport) or a public transport service to the nearest applicable school; or​


(b)
 Where the student's principal place of residence

​is at least 16km from the nearest applicable school; and
​is less than 4.5km from a school transport service approved by the chief executive (transport) or a public transport service to the nearest applicable school; and is
​at least 56km from the nearest applicable school using the route travelled by the transport service; or
​at least 3 hours travelling time per day from the nearest applicable school using the transport service.​

The student's family must measure the distance from their property entrance to the nearest State educational institution providing an education program appropriate for the student:

(a) If there is no school transport service to the institution by the shortest practicable  route: or

(b) If there is a school transport service to the institution by the total of the distance from the students property entrance to the school transport access point and the distance travelled by the school transport service from that point to the institution.

Medical condition

A student who has a health issue of such severity that the student will not be able to attend a local school on a full-time basis for more than 80 consecutive school days may be enrolled with the Brisbane School of Distance Education. BrisbaneSDE will provide a template document to the parent/carer to support application for eligibility under the medical condition category which must be completed by a relevant medical practitioner (registered under the Medical Practitioners Registration Act 2001 and/or registered under the Psychologists Registration Act 2001).
 
In the case of carer responsibilities please contact the enrolments team for further information.  BrisbaneSDE will provide a template document to support application for eligibility as a carer which must be completed by a relevant medical practitioner (registered under the Medical Practitioners Registration Act 2001 and/or registered under the Psychologists Registration Act 2001) concerning the requirement of carer.
 
Your school may provide BrisbaneSDE with supporting information for fee exemption under the medical category.  Supporting information from your current school may expedite enrolment with fee exemption for medical reasons.  See Medical Enrolments page for further information.

The Director-General of Education has the discretion to approve eligibility of other students for whom it is not reasonable to attend a regular school and who do not fit within the preceding sub categories. Applications can be made through the Brisbane School of Distance Education.
  
A written statement outlining the special circumstance must accompany the enrolment application and be directed to the Principal.​
