Important updates to eKindy eligibility criteria – Education (General Provisions) Amendment Act 2025. Legislative amendments took effect from Term 2, 20 April 2026 to clarify the medical and distance eligibility criteria for eKindy. A child’s eligibility under medical grounds is now based on absence from a centre-based service for more than 10 cumulative weeks across the year and distance is based on proximity to a relevant kindergarten which includes either an approved kindergarten program, or a state school that offers a State Delivered Kindergarten program.

Please note: All applications for registration from Term 2 will be considered based on the criteria below.

Who can register for eKindy?
|
Under s419F of the Education General Provisions Act (2006) a child is eligible for eKindy if:
|
- they turn 4 by June 30 in their kindy year
|
- their parent/s are Australian citizen or permanent residents of Australia and
|
- they fit into one of the following categories:
|
DistanceTheir residence is at least 16 km by the most direct route by road from the nearest relevant kindergarten (either a centre-based service providing an approved kindergarten program or a State Delivered Kindergarten)
|
Medical
They have a medical certificate/s stating they are unable to attend a centre-based service for more than 10 weeks during the registration year due to their health
|
Travelling/Itinerant lifestyleThe child’s principal place of residence is likely to change at least twice during the registration year due to the parent’s work; or the child will have to spend a period of at least 10 weeks or a number of periods of at least 2 weeks that total at least 10 weeks, away from the child’s principal place of residence during the registration year.

| eKindy offers an at home kindergarten program for children who are living in rural and remote areas, travelling or medically unable to attend a local early childhood service, in the year before Prep. This no cost program, delivered through BrisbaneSDE, is supported by qualified early childhood teachers and covers 15 hours of kindergarten for 40 weeks a year (school terms only).
